CSA CAVAC. Connected and autonomous vehicles are rapidly evolving and often complex technologies. I joined the leadership of this advisory council to develop guidelines and a standardization roadmap for Canada. During this period, the group commissioned and reviewed this publication and this publication to lay the groundwork for developing a CAV Code. I stepped down after two years due to a career change, but there are many exciting developments underway at CSA Group and elsewhere on Canadian CAV standards.
ISO TC22/SC32 covers international standards for automotive electronics, including functional safety, cybersecurity, and software updates. I also served as leader for Working Group 12.
ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6 covers telecommunications and information exchange between systems. In over a decade as vice-chair, secretary, and member of this mirror committee, I ensured Canadian stakeholders were represented in the international standards process. SC 6 publishes and maintains hundreds of ISO standards, including the (in)famous “7‑layer” OSI model for networking.
Recorded minutes for the IEEE 802.11bd task group, an international group standardizing the next-generation V2X communication technology by carefully evolving IEEE 802.11p, adding advanced features while maintaining backward compatibility. Also served as co-chair of the MAC ad-hoc, leading breakout sessions throughout 2019–2020. Left the role due to company restructuring mid-pandemic, but many of my contributions were published in IEEE 802.11bd-2022.
Editor of ISO 15638‑4 “Framework for cooperative telematics applications for regulated commercial vehicles (TARV) – Part 4: System security requirements”, achieving publication in February 2020. The project lacked a leader; I picked it up and guided it through the ISO process in about 12 months.
Edited the "Use Cases and Requirements" document containing contributions from experts in many countries. The published work became this e-book. ITU‑T is a specialized UN agency in Geneva focused on international telecommunications standardization.
Director on the board of this Canadian not‑for‑profit, an independently run local franchise of the Ten Thousand Villages program in Ottawa. I was mentored by one of the founders of Ten Thousand Villages Canada and volunteered there for many years. Helped ensure a financially positive wind‑down when Canadian operations ceased in 2020, including through the early stages of the COVID‑19 pandemic.
The annual Ten Thousand Villages Ottawa Festival Sale ran every weekend in November for over 40 years, supporting artisans in many developing countries through Fair Trade. As a member of the organizing committee, I was responsible for technical support of point‑of‑sale systems and training volunteers. This 100% volunteer sale averaged roughly $100k in GMV across 8–10 days of sales each year.
Edited and maintained the requirements, test plan, and technical specification documents for the DSRC Technical Task Group within the Wi‑Fi Alliance.
